The San Francisco Great Gorilla Run 7K (4.3 miles) is a fun run to benefit the world's last remaining mountain gorillas. The time to act is now, there are less than 700 mountain gorillas left. This is an event you can't miss- hundreds will run in full gorilla suits through Golden Gate Park for the cause!
We want you to JOIN US! It costs $100 to register and you get to take home and keep your very own gorilla suit. On top of that, we ask participants to fundraise any amount possible toward a $400 fundraising goal. As soon as you register, you get your own webpage to personalize. Invite your friends and family to sponsor you, to run with you, and showcase your effort to save the world's last, precious mountain gorillas.
Run as an individual or start your very own gorilla team! Invite coworkers to run on behalf of your company or organization, or run with a pack of friends and family. Pick a theme and run in group costume! Past Great Gorilla Runs have seen teams of gorilla hula dancers, firefighters, cheerleaders, punk gorillas, Elvis gorillas, and even gorillas in the mist (complete with fog machine). But the Great Gorilla Run has never met the Bay Area creative spirit. What kind of urban gorilla will you be? Your costume or team theme could win you prizes…
The Great Gorilla Run is in its fifth historic year. Since 2003, Great Gorilla Runs in London have attracted over 2,000 runners and successfully raised over $1,000,000 to sustain this important work. On June 10, 2007, San Francisco was the first U.S. city to host a Great Gorilla Run of its own kind!
Your host, the Gorilla Organization, is an international charity working to protect the survival of gorillas in their natural environment. In 2007, human interference into habitats is the largest threat to the mountain and eastern lowland gorillas of Central Africa. These precious forests are constantly under attack by unregulated logging, poaching, illegal agriculture, and the hunt for minerals for mobile phones. The Gorilla Organization confronts these threats while addressing the needs of communities living close to the gorilla habitat. Working in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Congo, the Gorilla Organization provides funds for individuals to start a business, creates access to water for children and families, replants trees, and has started local resource centers that teach environmental education and sustainable agriculture practices.
